What is Brazilian Jiu Jitsu?

Brazilian Jiu Jitsu (BJJ) is an increasingly popular grappling martial art. Primarily it is about being able to control our opponent through superior leverage and technique. Once controlled we can submit with a joint lock or choke. A submission is shown by tapping our opponent. Because it is low impact and doesn't involve striking we can train with near 100% effort with minimal risk of injury-such as head knocks that can be involved in other sports. The realistic nature of BJJ training means it is excellent for self defence as well as sport.

What do I need?

For the first few classes just a positive attitude and comfortable clothing that is free from zippers and anything that can catch or scratch our opponents. If you decide to stay you should look to purchase a gi or 'kimono'. This is a tough canvas uniform that is very unlikely to rip and is used in many of the techniques. These can be bought from some NZ stores (AMAS, Zenjo, Fui Mae) but there are often good second hand uniforms for purchase on Trademe and Facebook Market Place. Most kids grow out of their Gi's well before they wear them out. You may also want to get a mouthguard for sparring.

What does it cost?

The first two sessions are free to see if it's for you and after that it is $60 per term. Fees are payable to GSW Kids 01-0542-0064412-01 by week 3 of term.

What ages?

For now we take ages 7 up through to teens prior to their move into the adults class. Under 7s require a much higher ratio of instructors to students which we are unable to provide at present.
